Traders are always searching for strategies that look simple but hide powerful logic underneath. One of the most overlooked price action patterns is the inside bar, a classic formation that can become extremely effective when automated correctly.
In the first episode of our new series about unconventional trading strategies, we break down a volatility breakout system based on the inside bar pattern and show how it can be transformed into a rule-based strategy using StrategyQuant and S&P 500 data.
The idea behind this setup is simple.
An inside bar represents market consolidation, a moment where price moves inside the range of the previous candle, also called the mother bar. This compression often leads to strong momentum once the price finally breaks out.
Instead of trying to predict direction, this strategy waits for the market to show its hand.
We place stop orders outside the mother bar and let the breakout decide the trade.
What makes this approach interesting is that the win rate is not the main goal.
The strategy focuses on:
- Small losses when the breakout fails
- Large wins when a trend starts
- Trailing stop to hold strong moves
- Market filter using the 200 EMA
- Position scoring based on volatility compression
After adding a simple trend filter using the SPY 200 EMA, the backtest results change dramatically, reducing drawdowns and making the equity curve much smoother.

When setting a stop order for a long position, the ‘at price level’ and ‘order type’ options do not appear for me. How can I add or enable these fields?
