Amazon offers computing servers for low price – 36 cores and 60 GB memory / 3,091$ per hour (2200$ monthly)
Does anyone tried this? Does it worth?

Sorry, but that is TOTALLY overpriced. 99 Euro per month gets you a DEDICATED server (not a VPS, it´s your own server that you have full access too including BIOS via KVM!) After weeks of research of dedicated servers throughout the world, It doesn´t get any cheaper than https://contabo.com/?show=servers

Actually, adding the Windows OS adds €49 per month to that €99 per month hardware, meaning it suddenly becomes 50% more expensive.
Hence why in another thread I asked if SQ4 would run on Linux, which is always free to install. The savings if we move to grid computing would be pretty big.

I´ve installed my own Windows, why would you take theirs? You can install whatever you want on that box. Get a cheap Windows 8.1 license on eBay and that´s it.

I might be wrong, but I believe the standard version of Windows 8.1 only supports one physical CPU, so these dual Xeon servers would need the Pro version of Windows, that supports two physical CPU sockets. If it’s a quad Xeon server, then you have to use the (expensive) server versions of Windows.

I am using the Dedicated X which has one CPU only, I prefer it to the Xeon because it can be overclocked a lot as mentioned. You can also just installed Linux + Wine, works too for SQ.

This thread reminds me of a group of muscle car fans comparing hot rods.
I believe Threshold wins on a performance to cost ratio(11 y/o Single core AMD, now with a used server that leapfrogs the pack in price/performance) gotta love this thread data miners delight! 🙂
I’m running SQ on two self build boxes both i73770K with 32GB ram with a third identical box I use for trading and other testing.
Good Trading everybody

If you need real computing power for short periods of time, Amazon’s latest “rent by the hour” approach might suit.
128 Xeon cores, with 2TB RAM and 2x 2TB SSD for less than $20 an hour.
Try building a 2TB RAM pc at home. 🙂
