ATR Percent Rank

The Average True Range Percent Rank (ATRPR) indicator is a useful tool in technical analysis for measuring the volatility of a financial instrument relative to its historical price range. It is calculated by taking the Average True Range (ATR) and expressing it as a percentage of the historical price range over a specified period.

The ATRPR indicator can be helpful for various purposes in trading and investment:

  1. Identifying trending or range-bound markets: A high ATRPR value indicates that the market is experiencing higher volatility, which is often associated with trending markets. A low ATRPR value suggests that the market is experiencing lower volatility, which is typically associated with range-bound markets.
  2. Setting stop-loss and take-profit levels: Traders can use the ATRPR to gauge the current volatility and set appropriate stop-loss and take-profit levels accordingly. In a high volatility market, wider stops may be needed to avoid being stopped out prematurely. Conversely, in a low volatility market, tighter stops may be used to protect profits.
  3. Timing entries and exits: The ATRPR can help traders identify potential entry and exit points based on the market’s volatility. For example, in a range-bound market, traders might look for low ATRPR values as a signal to enter a trade, expecting that volatility will eventually increase and the market will break out of its range.
  4. Risk management: By understanding the market’s volatility through the ATRPR, traders can manage their risk more effectively. They can adjust their position sizes and use appropriate risk management techniques based on the market’s current volatility.
  5. Comparing different instruments: The ATRPR can be used to compare the volatility of different financial instruments, allowing traders to choose the instruments that best fit their risk tolerance and trading style.

Keep in mind that the ATRPR indicator should not be used in isolation but rather in conjunction with other technical analysis tools and indicators to improve the overall effectiveness of a trading strategy.

You can use it in MT4/MT5, Tradestation, and Multicharts. Some basic conditions are also included.
