Hi all,
My current computer specifications are as follows:
Intel Core i5-2400 SPU @ 3.10Ghz
8.00 GB RAM
2 Hard Drives – SSD 60GB & 1TB HDD
I think that this is a little bit slow and am looking at buying a new computer to generate strategies faster.
I was thinking about the following computer (as it is within my price range):
Intel Core i7 4790 Quad 3.6GHz
32GB DDR3 RAM
120GB SSD 3TB HDD
Upgrade CPU Cooler to Water Liquid Cooling System (dual fan radiator)
Upgrade to 750W Power Supply with Large Quiet Cooling Fan
Q. What would you all think of my potential new computer specs?
Q. What type of specs should I add instead?
Q. What type of computers are you all running SQ on?
Thanks.

I’ve just installed my main license onto a retired server at work. DELL R620 PowerEdge Server with 64MB, Dual Xeon, 12 Cores each and attached 20TB SAS Raid storage 😀 This is going to be my workhorse running all the time.
I have SQ performance settings cranked up all the way and is only using 30% CPU room for more 🙂
My development version on second license where I want to experiment etc is running no problems from my 2014 mac book pro retina with 8GB Ram assigned to parallels VM.

Hi the fastet and cheapest computer for the SQ 3.8 at the moment is the I7-4790.
I have a i7-4790 with 32 GB. (810 Euro)
The cheapest Shop in the Internet for this pc is pclike (I get no provision 🙂
I started two Instances of the SQ on this computer. I give every Instance 12 GB.
The I7-4790 uses Turboboost with 4.2-4.3 Ghz (This works good)
I compared I7-3770K, I7-4930K, I7-4790K and I7-920, AMD bulldozer 8xxx
Don´t AMD Bulldozer, it is very slow.

@ strategy, why don’t you just run an emulation of windows over iOS? Tons of traders do that.

@strategy: beside a VM with Windows, you could simply buy a PC, MAC´s are overpriced anyway and use the same hardware as PC´s nowadays. Just that you pay more for it;)

Hi,
I think it will be cheaper to buy a new computer than renting one, you’ll pay too much for the performance.
I personally have little bit older i7-2600K, at its time it had the best price/performance ratio. I don’t know what is the situation now.
Good processor with enough threads is what is important for SQ.
when you say enough threads, what you recon for minimum nr of threads (8? 12? 16? etc)?

It´s not cheaper to buy a new computer, because when renting you can end the rent monthly and rent a newer one for the same price whenever there is new hardware, that´s what I am doing since years.
SQ supports as many threads as there are CPU cores. I have a machine with 24 cores for example, all are being used by SQ.

Very interesting. If SQ4 was out now, I’d look to build one of those systems, but at the moment I’m not using SQ3 much.
Just a note that there’s a 16 RAM slot version of the motherboard http://www.asrockrack.com/general/productdetail.asp?Model=EP2C602-4L/D16#Specifications
This supports 16 slots of 8GB DDR3 giving 128GB rather than 64GB mentioned in the article.

I’ve had 2 Dell Poweredge 2900 servers in my basement I’ve been using the last year.
Each has 32GB ram (64 total) and each has x2 (4CPUs total) quadcore xeons @ 3.7 GHz
HDDs are x4 80GB Barracuda 15000RPM RAID 0. Nothing important is stored on them and all strategies are regularly backed up.
@mabi
That article was great, I might change out the motherboards in my poweredges and do that.

I spend 50 % of my time in China , Here they can have a whole block of small garage putor companies that serve local companies, however. The most popular site for buy anything online is something called www. Taobao.com (owned by Alibabba). It is all in Chinese but i figured that since the reason for exchanging these older CPU is power usage someone overhere have taken advantage of that and putting these cpu´s in to new machines and sure enought i found one where i can buy these complete packages. They have a shit load of different configurations including the one with 2 cpu in the article for around 800 usd. So now i do not now which one i should buy 😉

They built that for 600USD.
For 900USD you can now get 2 used dell server racks with X2 xeon X7560 (4 CPUs total). Thats 32 cores/64 threads with about ~128GB ram for 900USD. This is what I’m gona do.
