Hi all,

My current computer specifications are as follows:

Intel Core i5-2400 SPU @ 3.10Ghz

8.00 GB RAM

2 Hard Drives – SSD 60GB & 1TB HDD

I think that this is a little bit slow and am looking at buying a new computer to generate strategies faster.

I was thinking about the following computer (as it is within my price range):

Intel Core i7 4790 Quad 3.6GHz

32GB DDR3 RAM

120GB SSD 3TB HDD

Upgrade CPU Cooler to Water Liquid Cooling System (dual fan radiator)

Upgrade to 750W Power Supply with Large Quiet Cooling Fan

Q. What would you all think of my potential new computer specs?

Q. What type of specs should I add instead?

Q. What type of computers are you all running SQ on?

Thanks.

Those CPU’s on ebay are Intel engineering samples.  They are property of Intel and are never meant to be sold.  Most motherboard Bios will do a check and refuse to boot up with an Engineering Sample fitted.  Those CPU’s were meant for electronic design companies to develop their new motherboard products.

I wouldn’t buy them.

I’d also find a cheaper Motherboard or follow the build mabi had linked. They did the entire server for 600 USD. Your MB alone almost costs that.

I really feel is is never worth it to buy older model used CPUs and a brand new motherboard to fit their socket. I’d just buy both used to be honest or follow mabi’s link.

Hmmmm, ok  here’s my main rig which I use for StrategyQuant,  EA Wizard & those 99.9% every tick back testing

But I’s aging, so am thinking about upgrades..

i7-4770K @ 4.0Ghtz ~

8gig Memory

(Always the latest and greatest Nvidia Gaming video card) pity StrategyQuant is not cuda compliant..

PCIe SSD & 4TB Seagate for OS’es and backups

36TB addition storage

Multiple offsite VPS’s for MT4 platforms

I was thinking about installing StrategyQuant on a powerfull VPS and let it run 24/7, but haven’t got around to that yet

Mike, why to wait ?

if you can beat it with old M910 under £2k (two machines) and you get 80 cores / 160 threads and 256GB Ram, I have not checked all compatibility , but wanted to see how many cores I can get in 1k , not talking about DDR3 vs DDR4 , this reply just for fun, not for technical discussion, so do not take it seriously, but it might help to think in different direction.  OLD might be not so bad after all.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2820280318304x 10Cores – £100 (£400)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/182108688188 4 sockets £200

http://www.ebay.com/itm/3221268681764x 64GB £70 (£280)

This is for fun, do not take it seriously. I’m on E5-26xx v3 DDR4 still 🙂

Enjoy reading 😉

E7-2870 is very old technology (32nm vs 14nm) and much slower than modern i7, plus it uses tonnes of electricity. Not for me thanks. 😉

Hi Guys,

All the talk about the E5-2670’s being cheap, got me thinking.  If you want a server but are having a hard time finding a decent Motherboard for a fair price, which was my case.  I just bit the bullet after some research and pricing out new components.  I bought a used Dell Precision T7600 2x E5-2670 (SR0KX) 128gb DDR3 Ram, 256gb SSD and Windows 7 Pro.  There are a bunch listed on Amazon.  If you cannot find what you are looking for you can configure one at there website.  https://www.theserverstore.com/category/workstations   I have no affiliation with them.  Should be arriving in a week or so. If you order one shoot them an email requesting the (SR0KX) processors.
