Has anyone tried to install the same version of StrategyQuantX on the same hardware using Windows and Linux?

If so, have you noticed any performance difference between both versions?

I’m running sqx on a Linux VPS. Background is, that you can rent a more powerful vps for the same money as a windows vps (you have to pay for windows license). So in this case the performance is higher through more cores and ram.

The only disadvantage on Linux side is the akward starting and using the GUI of sqx. It’s not that smooth like in the windows version. But who is already working with Linux knows these behaviour on other software. 😉

Hi Conmariin,

I´m just in the process of setting up SQX on a Ubuntu VPS and don´t seem to get it to start. In your post you mentioned “…the akward starting and using the GUI of SQX”.

Do you have any hint as to how I´m starting SQX on my server?

Hi Gerhard,

Ah, another Linux fighter! 😉
First you have to set the permissions correctly, otherwise it won’t work at all “Add executable permissions to file StrategyQuant_nocheck
using a command: chmod +x StrategyQuant_nocheck”. Then I put a shortcut on the desktop and set the necessary permissions.

Then you have to be patient. It does not always start immediately. If SQX gets stuck somewhere, then only “Kill Process” helps and then try to start again.

In the Windows version I like to use the Graal VM instead of the original Java in SQX, because it is faster. Unfortunately, this works with Linux only rarely or not at all. With the original Java SQX starts in any case.

Oh, please remember to install LibreOffice, otherwise you can’t generate a report PDF in SQX. At least if you have a minimal configuration of Ubuntu (wanted to have as little ballast as possible).

From your experience, does it work better or worse than using it on windows?or stile the same?

Hi Roberto,

I like Windows just as much as Linux. I always take just what I need from both worlds. Which brings me to your question.

SQX itself runs equally well on both. Subjectively, I couldn’t notice any big differences.

My switch to Linux had other reasons:

To run multiple workflows at the same time, you need a lot of CPU cores and a lot of RAM. The more, the better.

Problem with Windows VPS: The OS itself consumes a lot of CPU/RAM and you have to pay for the Windows licence.

With a VPS hoster I can have a 3x more powerful Linux VPS instead of a Windows VPS for the same money, no licence costs and Linux itself is very economical in CPU/RAM consumption, so that much more hardware resources are left over for SQX.

Hi Roberto,

I can fully support what Coinmariin just explained. If you want to hire a massive machine to develop strategies that work and don´t want to run out of your budget, then you have to go for Linux.

In my case I have “hired” a V-Server from Strato ( a German vendor), which gives me 16 cores and 60 GB RAM for the price of only 33 Euro / Month. You will never even get close to that price / performance when you want to run StrategyQuant on a Windows VPS. Exactly as Coinmariin said.

So it pays off to spend some time learning Linux to set up machines that really perform!

Best

Thanks for the replies Conmariin and AlgotradingDE!
I was wondering why I love linux (used for many years in the past ) and am glad that SQX is usable without any added bugs whatsoever.
Programming in mql4 instead, there are several bugs in the metatrader that make development a little more difficult. But on the other hand, they are programs created for windows.
