Because the interest is high among new users of SQX (i saw many topics with the same goal), i thought it would be a good idea to concentrate everything hardware related in one topic where new users but also more experienced ones, can easely find in one place what they are looking for. What to buy, what configuration, air or liquid cooled…etc.
This topic is designed to help users in choosing the most apropriate hardware configuration according to their budget, a new computer or an upgrade. Also, posting benchmarks for processors, general raw performance benchmarks as a guide but also examples of settings in SQX and the resulting performance for others to have an idea what expectations they can have from a certain processor.
I am sure the contribution of the more experienced users will be greatly appreciated by everyone.
For starters, in the following days and weeks, i will post different results (pairs and timeframes) on my configuration, an AMD 3700X (3,6Ghz 8 cores) and 32GB RAM.
To be relevant, we can agree on a minimum criteria, for example, each setting must be run at least 24 hours, and we can agree to count the accepted strategies/hour (in databank).

ok..thanks…. I’m trying in real admiral market ecn… slippage too high compared to dukaskopy… not recommended
then I go on ryzen 9 3900x
I think it’s a fair compromise between price and performance

make sure you have a good, brand, power supply between 550 – 700W
you will also need a discrete (separate) video card because the system wont have a graphic chip, neither the processor or the motherboard, if you plug in a monitor on the motherboard, you will get a black screen meaning no video signal. You need an entry level but modern video card, mostly from nvidia, something like GT730 or a GT1030, it can be passively cooled (without a fan). You can also use a second hand Quadro card which is a server version of the geforce
regarding the performance in SQ of 3900X, it all depends to what you are comparing it with

power supply 700 watts and discrete video card entry level
my old system is i7 8750 32gb ram ssd……about 38000 str/houres benchmark

a 3900X is almost 3 times more powerful than a i7 8750H, although its a very recent processor. This can be seen from both passmark and cpu-z scores, but we are comparing two very different things, 8750H is a laptop procesor
the 8750H makes 3384 points in CPU-Z where the minimum for SQ generating is over 5000, its too weak for SQ

i forgot to mention that for motherboard, although technically you can buy any AM4 socket motherboard, one with a B450 chipset and micro ATX form factor would be ideal for a cheaper compact configuration. Also one with an onboard M.2 connector
plenty models to choose from Asus, Gigabyte or MSI

for power supplies, Corsair uses a wide range of manufacturers, from CWT to Great Wall and HEC and with a wide range of qualities from poor to excelent. When you buy Corsair PSU’s, you have to know what to buy
stay away from the entry level non modular CX and VS series

these days in eastern Europe being a warm air front from the south, i had 63 – 64C on the processor on an ambient temperature of 26,5C. Outside and on accuwheater it showed 21C
in the summer, air conditioning will be mandatory, a few months, or simply take a break from generating

Hi,
just to add to the benchmarks:
Ryzen 3950X overclocked to 4.2 GHz (Cinebench R15, 4200 points), 32GB DDR4 3400 CL16 RAM, building on 34 years of H1 data (no 1M resolution!), averaging 180.000 strategies/hour.

a pleasure to have you back, i noticed you haven’t posted for a while
what liquid cooling solution are you using?

Hi, Ivan 😉 I have never been really gone, just not really contributed for a long time because of personal reasons – never stopped trading though 🙂
No liquid cooling, I am using a Dark Rock Pro 4 with rather silent fans. CPU is actually undervolted too (as low as I could go after almost a week of testing), so temperatures are just fine and never exceed the thermal limit of the 95°C that this thing can handle.

in another practical example, on XAUUSD and M15 timeframe, selected timeframe precision, the 64 GB is not enough to run the generation
but my main question is not technical, memory related but more importantly, which of the two approaches would yield better results: lower precision but with a lot more strategies and possible combinations, or higher precision with lower number of strategies in databank
i am thinking to start in the near future a new, separate thread on general approach for beginners but in a very coherent and short way

why is your builder using so much memory? because you have 10000 strategies in databank, i think that for “normal” usage is 32 GB RAM enough, but you need to filter strategies in the workflow, not saving the thrash
about the stats – 5000 accepted strats per hour? doenst seems to me, that your filtering is hard enough (or maybe something wrong in setting for GOLD)
and why to generate for 22 hours with saving 10000 of them – 2 hours could do the same job
You want to be a profitable algotrader? We started using StrateQuant software in early 2014. For now we have a very big knowhow for building EAs for every possible types of markets. We share this knowhow, apps, tools and also all final strategies with real traders. If you want to join us, fill in the FORM.

@hankeys: i plan to open a separate thread with workflow as the only subject because this is not related to hardware
in a dedicate thread we can detail, explain and recommend general workflows, targeted to beginners because those simple recommendation wont be of any interest for advanced traders
